Well, if you recall, I can control lightning. It's generated by a mutation in my heart -- it's a normal thing that all human hearts do, but because of my status as a meta-human, mine behaves... slightly differently. It can cause damage if handled improperly. To myself and to others, but mostly to myself.
The good news is that it's been handled through normal cardiology in the past. Dr. Yue hooked me up to a monitor and provided me with some medication to help handle it, but, again, it seems like she's disappeared.
vanished, huh? yeah, that... happens, sometimes. seems people can come and go like the wind here, sometimes. if you've already got medication and the like, then emily should be more than happy to give you a check-up and make sure everything's functioning properly. i don't know the extent of her medical expertise, but, i've never heard a complaint from anyone who's gone with her.

a metahuman... is that someone who has magic natively, in your world?
[sublieutenant emily dyer. they mark the name down in their head and make sure to bring it up the next chance they get—perhaps at the hopefully-upcoming introductory post for any new members of the sutoku alliance. the rest of it, then, is a little more complex.]
If you believe the propaganda, meta-humans are meant to represent the next stage of evolution for humanity. We make up roughly 10% of the population, or so I've heard, and all of us have some sort of mutation that grants us extrahuman abilities. I've known people with enhanced strength, shapeshifters, pyrokinetics... that sort of thing. I wouldn't really call it magic. Magic probably doesn't have drawbacks.
i guess you're right. at least, not any that don't probably happen with any group that seems to have more abilities than other people. all the standard exploitation.
[ Admittedly, this metahumanity did sound a bit like... well. Best not to bring that up just yet. It was a complicated subject in the best of company. ]
point being, it's all a part of who you are, right? guess that does explain a few things.
Let's say that there are people who don't necessarily agree with the way humanity is evolving. I don't know if it's exploitation so much as it is a public relations nightmare. I could go into it more, but I'd rather not bog you down with politics from a world that isn't yours.
Yeah. Ultimately, it's just who and what I am. Can I ask what it explains? I could also just tell you, if you have any questions...
but those people have pretty vested interests in how it should, right? i get it. it might be politics from a different world, but it's still politics. and that's something i unfortunately am getting better at understanding. if you need someone to listen to it, i don't mind.
[ Sutoku has been... 'good' to Cloud in some respects. ]
you seemed like you were trying to avoid getting into the weeds on some things, back when we first ran into each other. i would, too, if i had been in your shoes. i don't know if i have any questions about it, really. i guess, other than, well. anything we can do to help? beyond making sure emily keeps you healthy, i mean.
Oh... well, yes, I guess that particular secret's out. Haha. I just want to make sure I know my own limits before I commit to something too dangerous. I suppose... if there's one thing you might be able to do to help, could you not spread this information around? About my heart, I mean. And what might happen to it.
It's not something that absolutely needs to be a secret, or I wouldn't have told you, but... I don't want people to worry about me. Unless, well, it's their job to do it, I suppose.
well, it is my job to worry about you. but if you're handling it, and you know your limits, i won't push the subject. just make sure you get a checkup by dyer. especially if you plan on volunteering for anything risky in the future.
[ By 'risky', he's making sure she knows that this should be done before any planned operations in the near or distant future. ]
beyond that is outside my wheelhouse. unless you're going to be looking to train up cardio so it's not as much a problem?
You've done more than enough to earn my trust, Cloud. I'll check in with Dr. Dyer, and I'll make sure that's the first thing I do. You know how I feel about making myself a liability.
[they consider the idea of training...]
Building up cardio has always struck me as a bad idea, since exercise usually means... well, exertion. But if I have someone who doesn't mind watching me to make sure I don't hurt myself, it could work.
well, if you don't mind waiting a few weeks to get started. i do have a training hall for sutokus where they can get ready for big combat operations. i can't imagine we won't be able to work in some cardio there. build up your endurance a little bit. maybe make it so you aren't worrying about your heart all the time.
but, uh, definitely get the all-clear from dr. dyer first, yeah?
I like that idea. I definitely don't mind waiting to get started. I'll be using that time to get as clean a bill of health as possible, after all. I'll probably be starting my training with Marie around the same time, so I can just make a regular schedule out of it.
